Our Philosophy and Inspiration Comes From…
Inspired by forest schools around the world and literature like Last Child In The Woods by Richard Louv, Forest Teachers at Freckled Fawn Nature School strive to help students make meaningful connections to the world in which we live by providing opportunities for enriching play based learning. Incorporating teaching styles and techniques from many child centered ideologies, focusing on the whole child and fostering independence, creativity, and curiosity.
Our Mission…
Making meaningful connections in learning while we build our appreciation of nature and strengthen our community.
Our Teaching Styles are…
Place-Based
Place-based education immerses students in the world immediately around them. It focuses on local culture, landscapes, and experiences as a foundation to higher academic learning. By focusing on their “home town” our students create a deeper more meaningful connection with nature, producing individuals who respect, care for, and appreciate the world around them for years to come.
Play-based/Experiential learning
Allowing our students the freedom to explore and play on their own terms means more opportunities for learning and engagement! By incorporating play-based instruction and experiential learning we at Freckled Fawn are allowing our students to take the lead. This style of teaching allows students to focus on what interests them and provides teachers with the opportunity to explore and expand on a topic within a group of children eager to learn and ready to listen.
nature study
Nature is our passion and sharing this love of the flora and fauna around us allows us to make meaningful connections with the world we live in. Wether it be measuring stumps to see which is taller, or matching the bark of one tree to another, learning is naturally interwoven. Our students experience nature to its fullest by jumping in puddles and experiencing cause and effect. Using magnifying glasses to spot the tiniest of mushrooms on our lovely oak trees. Being able to spot migrating birds and name them on their own are just a few of the many things our students take away daily.
““It is so satisfying to see my son enjoying the outdoors no matter the weather conditions. A little rain or cold is no reason to be cooped up indoors especially when our rainy season lasts for 6 months. I’m hopeful his love of the outdoors no matter the weather will continue into adulthood.”
